Learn About Cervical Laminoplasty Surgical procedures in India

Cervical Laminoplasty Overview

The spinal cord in our body is one of the important organs of our body. It is connected to the nerves over the
neck, which is surrounded by cervical vertebrae. The bones connecting to the nerves and the spine has a spinal canal from where the spinal cord is seen getting passed. The ligaments and the blood vessels are present inside the opening found in between vertebrae known as intervertebral foramen. The pain over the cervical region can go with procedures like cervical laminoplasty surgery. With this procedure, you get relieved from the pressure, which exerts pressure on your neck that helps in making you free from the pain. Now, let’s check the cervical laminoplasty surgery in the following paragraphs as under:

What Is Cervical Laminoplasty?

Cervical laminoplasty is a surgical technique that remove pressure from the spinal cord in then neck. Pressure on the spinal cord can be due to various causes including degenerative changes, arthritis, bone spurs, disc herniations, OPLL, tumors, or fractures. Frequently this spinal cord pressure, called spinal stenosis, can occur at multiple levels of the cervical spine at the same time. If this pressure is severe enough, symptoms called myelopathy can develop. Laminoplasty may be an excellent option to remove the pressure, allow the spinal cord to heal, and reverse the symptoms, which have been bugging the patient.

Cervical Laminoplasty Procedure

In this procedure called Laminoplast, the surgeon rather removing the bones, is seen making the lamina thin at one end and then made the cutting at the other side in order to make a "hinge" like what we do while making a door. With this hinge, you simply end up opening the bony area, which further expands the space that are available for the spinal cord. Also, it helps in allowing the doctor in order to address the adjacent spine segments or the levels, which can be further mildly compressed. In this procedure of Laminoplasty, you will find 30 to 50 percent of motion being secured at the involved levels of your spine.

This is termed as a greater percentage than either of laminectomy procedures or with the anterior surgery. Since we know the pain at the neck is often related to the motion—and some of these motions would be still there after carrying out this surgical procedure—and with laminoplasty is not often employed in order to treat the patients with the neck pain. As you find the laminoplasty increasing the space available, the surgical procedure doesn’t make sure that the spinal canal will be seen with the approach of open method for the spinal cord. However, the other demerit for the same is that the lamina is hinged and can be seen inadvertently closed
